Property Tax is Having a Negative Impact on Businesses In Coquitlam

Businesses in Coquitlam (including Urban Gate)  are fed up with paying up to 47% more than last year on their 2011 property taxes. Many people think that there is nothing businesses can do. However, the mayor of Coquitlam, Richard Stewart and his council can actually make the commercial property tax rate fairer, by capping the gap between what residential and business owners pay, and finding other ways to meet their budget obligations. As you may be aware, Coquitlam businesses pay up to four times more than residents on their property tax. This is the biggest gap out of all of BC’s 30 largest municipalities by population. We are working to build on the research the Canadian Federation of Independent Business has already done on this subject with their annual Property Tax Report. We invited local reporters to hear our stories, so they can let people know what is going on in our community.

If you are a local business owner in Coquitlam and have a story that you would like to share, contact Darcy by emailing darcy@urbangate.ca or by calling 604-472-8888.
